Andras Schiff

彼の経歴は次の通りです：近頃は指揮にも熱意を示している様です。
Andras Schiff was born in Budapest， Hungary， in 1953 and started piano lessons at the age of five. Subsequently he continued his musical studies at the Ferenc Liszt Academy， and in London.

Recitals on the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach， Haydn， Mozart， Beethoven， Schubert， Chopin， Schumann and Bartok form an important part of his activities.

He performs with most of the major international orchestras and conductors. During the next few years the main part of his activities with orchestras will be performances of the Piano Concertos by Bach， Beethoven and Mozart， which he will be directing from the piano. In 1999 he created his own chamber orchestra， the Cappella Andrea Barca.

For the Bach celebration year he gave many Bach recitals and conducted Bach’s St Matthew Passion and other compositions.
In 2001 he directed concert performances of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte in Vicenza and at the Edinburgh Festival.

From 1989 until 1998 he was artistic director of the "Musiktage Mondsee" near Salzburg， an annual one-week chamber music festival. In 1995， together with Heinz Holliger， he founded the Ittinger Pfingstkonzerte in Kartause Ittingen， Switzerland. In 1998 he started a similar series， entitled "Homage to Palladio"， in Vicenza， Italy.

彼のバッハのキーボード曲演奏については、音楽評論家の吉田秀和氏が次の様に述べています。

シフの「ゴールドベルグ変奏曲」を聞いたが、それは素晴らしかった。しかし、「ゴールドベルグ変奏曲」と言うと、どうしてもグレン・グールドのそれが目の前に立ちふさがっている。新しい演奏で、グールドを抜いたと聴き手を納得させる力のあるものに巡り会うのは難しい。シフの演奏は、グールドと較べても、尚かつ、新鮮なものを感じさせる点、流石とは思う。そうして、何故選りに選って、この難曲をわざわざピアノで弾くかと言う問いに対して、聴き手を納得させるのは、グールドの他にはシフしかいないのではと考えさせる所までには行っている。

「平均率」の演奏も素敵である。シフの弾き方は、ノン・レガートに傾斜するグールドとは逆に、レガートを主体に、そこにノン・レガートを混入させることにしている。ペダルは勿論殆ど使わない。弱音ペダルも同じであるが、音の強度としては、弱音にずっと近い所で弾く。曲の全部がｍｐと言う場合もある。その結果。小声でそして円滑に、語られて行く話を聞く様な気持ちを与えるのです。
